Parents Playbook for AI. What is AI?
It’s been an honor working with Paper Crane Factory on a video series for the Transparency Coalition, an organization advocating for AI technologies that prioritize safety, transparency, and the public good, particularly when it comes to protecting children.

What actually is AI? How does it work? What’s the difference between traditional machine learning and generative AI, and what do parents and kids need to understand about the technology becoming part of their everyday lives?
This episode of Parents Playbook for AI breaks down the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, explaining complex concepts in a way that feels clear and accessible. Understanding how these systems work and what they can and can’t do is an important first step towards helping families make more informed decisions about how they use them.
The art direction was built around a black-and-white palette inspired by the visual language of newspapers and playbooks. The goal was to find a style that could make a serious and complex subject feel approachable and engaging without making it feel childish.
Working entirely in black and white became one of the most interesting challenges of the project. Without color to create separation or direct attention, depth and hierarchy had to come from composition, contrast, scale, texture, and motion. Every element needed a clear purpose - guiding the viewer through information-dense scenes without overwhelming them.
That thinking shaped the illustration style as well. Details were deliberately stripped back, leaving just enough to communicate each idea while keeping the compositions clear and readable. Motion became another tool for directing attention, revealing information at the right moment and helping abstract concepts feel intuitive.
And because serious subjects don’t have to result in serious-looking animation, small playful details and visual Easter eggs were woven throughout the films, adding moments of personality and discovery along the way.
It’s always rewarding to work on educational projects, but especially ones that use design and animation to make important, complicated subjects easier to understand.
